REAL SIMPLE

I absolutely love Real Simple magazine! I always love their all-natural approach and quick tips and tricks ;) So anyways, here's an article that I found in this months edition: What Important Life Lesson has Motherhood taught you? Here are some pictures of what was written - I can relate to these all too well - the joys of motherhood for ya! xo

Penelope has given me a run for my money on this one! She's such a doll with a huge, independent heart - Makes great character until she's determined to stick her finger in an electrical socket for the 100th time. (We have safety blocks on them but she still tries to pull them off) #thisismylife #monkeycoveringeyesemoji

This article really hit home because of an article in the Huffington Post that I read yesterday.. It was written by a mom that simply stated how she doesn't care about your parenting techniques - I completely agree.
I see far too many women being judged by other moms (of all people) for their parenting style. I think it's important to remember that every ones story is so different. Kids grow and change by the day so just because you see my child crying hysterically one day, doesn't mean that's our daily life and you're warranted to tell me, or anyone for that matter, how we could "do better". If you've ever dealt with a child, you'd quickly figure out that sometimes, not a single thing but a nap is going to fix the crying or whining and sometimes you gotta get groceries... Feeding my family is super important, ya know.
Some of the other few that pretend their advice is absolutely perfection - get that negativity out of yo' life. Y'all, there is absolutely no room for "friends" like that on this bus.
"Do not let someone who has never walked in your shoes make you feel like you're not up to par with a game they haven't even tried playing yet." -TBP

This blog is sort of rambling but I can't stand the division in what should be a sisterhood. Kids spill food and are extremely messy, no matter what kind of crib they're sleeping in or they brand of clothes they're wearing - There's absolutely no difference between my reality and yours. We're all doing what's best while working with a few hours of sleep at the same time. We're all amazing and bring so much to the table.. But don't get that confused with force feeding me what you're bringing tho. Not everyone likes cheesecake, ya feel me? Just come to the table to enjoy the company because while cheesecake may be sweet, it's not for everyone - remember that the next time you spew off some nice-hate to a fellow mama doing her best ;)

Love all of the mamas I've met along the way and the lessons I've been taught through this amazingly fun journey - New mama friends, I welcome you too! Let's be friends and brag about our amazing kids together, because they really are the most perfect little things to walk the earth, right!? Please feel free to write me and give me ideas on blogs you'd love to see me write - I'm open to them all - even non-mama-related ones! You can anonymously fill out the box to the right, if you're on an iPad, tablet or desktop! OR if you're on your phone, just scroll to the bottom and click View Full Website to see the contact box!

Classic, Everyday bag! | Diaper bag edition

So after going through airports, riding in rentals and hauling an unimaginable amount of stuff, this bag helped us out the most through our travels! This is the [Classic Diaper Bag] from Pottery Barn Kids that I've had my eye on for FOREVER, even before I was pregnant with P but last Christmas, Devon surprised me with another diaper bag for so I was able to check that necessity off of my list - WELL.... I still ended up with it and I am soooooo glad I have it. This bag is gigantic. I mean, HUGE. Ginormous. You get the point. I thought my diaper bag held a lot? So wrong. But the best part?? This isn't JUST a diaper bag... This is literally an everything bag. From blankets, swaddles, bottles, formula, water bottles, shoes, outfits, magazines, P's iPad, and seriously, if we needed to carry it, it went straight into this piece of 'luggage'. And I use that term because it doubles as an overnight bag as well but it isn't insanely obnoxious. I've carried bigger style bags ever since I've carried a bag so this fit right into my life.
So Mamas, if you're in the diaper bag/overnight bag market and are looking for a really good, durable bag, THIS it is. You'll even get a changing pad with it that's really good size and matches with the color exterior.
Oh, and rolling around Disney for the ENTIRE day with this thing loaded up to the MAX, I can say with confidence that this bag is really durable and made really, really well! I don't see this falling apart anytime soon and it's so far, been money well spent!

\\ What we use MOST at 6 months //

So here's the deal: Yesterday we OFFICIALLY turned our living room into an infant jungle-gym. I knew the time was coming as Penelope has been crawling/scooting and pulling up on ANYTHING she can get her hands on!
Before I had a baby, I babysat a lot of kids but never remembered that they became mobile this soon - Let the baby-proofing begin and I have to add that I absolutely ADORE this phase!!! She's beyond independent and really takes interest in doing things on her own. I'm not claiming she's a genius baby or anything buuuuuuuut I think she's the smartest of all time sooooooo........
Beyond all of that, going back to a [previous post] on product favorites, we have put away the rock-n-play and don't use the bassinet upper part of our 4Moms Breeze any longer because she was on her way to doing a stunt right from the top of we didn't do it and do it SOON. So here's an updated list for y'all.. And if you're wondering, we still use & love our [4Moms] Play Yard! It really is something that we've used from birth and continue to use every single day. OH! And I always wanted to be able to go into the toy aisle and actually be able to SHOP and pick out fun things for her and that time HAS ARRIVED! Woooo! This age is the fun part because she actually enjoys what you get for her and can entertain herself for hours (or minutes, depending ;)) - pure bliss, for us and her!

1 ANY Play Mat:
Even though we particularly like these two: [this] & [this].  Any will do! They're all awesome, it's just a matter of personal preference but I will say that the one with sides is the best because when they start rolling, that helps them stay-put in one area.
These things are a awesome because they are used from birth on up.. you can't go wrong with em'. Here are a few more we have and love... They're all great quality and have lasted wash after wash! Click [here] & [here]. All can be bought at BabiesRus.

2 Jumper:
Penelope loved hers from about 4mo to about 2 weeks ago. She would rather be on the floor, pulling herself around but nonetheless, this kept her entertained for a few short months and it also helped strengthen her legs to prepare her for what she's currently doing: pulling up on
e v e r y t h i n g. Click [here] for the one we use!

3 Aiden + Anais Stroller&Swaddle Blankets:
[These] are perfect for when your little babe is a newborn and perfect for when they're older! I absolutely adore anything made by A+A so it should be no surprise that I'd recommend these as well! They are decently priced and are better than the swaddle blankets for winter time and cooler weather. We use this on the floor, stroller rides, a regular blanket and it's big enough for an adult and true to A+A fashion, these are reeeeally soft and durable... Plus, free shipping through BuyBuyBaby - You can't go wrong.

4 TOYS
The title speaks for itself and even 6 month olds LOVE em' so I'm just going to list Penelope's favorites:
[here]
[here]
[here]
[here]
[here]
[here]
Anything that hangs and sounds crunchy and we're good to go!

For nighttime:
Honest note: We don't travel ANYWHERE without the sleep sheep^^!!!!!! It is a must-have and has been since P was born!

|| Favorite Pregnancy Apps ||

It's seriously sooo exciting seeing someone pregnant that's preparing to take on THEE most amazing journey of their life! I get such chills thinking how absolutely amazing it is that God chooses us to be apart of creation.... It's magic and such a personal experience and I'm so thankful I had the chance to be apart of that! I think it's totally worth sharing my own list of the TOP 10 Prgnancy apps that I think anyone that's expecting should have! These apps helped me tremendously and I highly recommend them and of course you'll be obsessed with following your growing little babe through the weeks so these are a definite MUST for you too!
These are listed from the start of determining your estimated due date and finishing with a feeding log once your perfect angel arrives!

| TRYING TO CONCEIVE |
1) Ovia
This app is GOLD if you're trying to conceive! It will help you determine every factor during this time of sit-and-wait and we all know how grueling those two weeks can be and this app really takes the guess work out of it all and gives you a near-perfect timeline of when you would expect to become pregnant AND determining the birthdate of your little babe!

| YOU'RE PREGNANT! |
2) BabyBump Pregnancy
3) What To Expect
4) Pregnancy +
5) BabyCenter
6) Sprout
7) The Bump

| CONTRACTION TIMER |
8) Full Term - Labor and Contraction Timer
I didn't get to use this app because I was admitted to the hospital after my water broke and I had absolutely NO signs of contractions at that time, but once I was put on pictocin and my contractions started picking up, I wanted to use this app at least once so I could "get the full experience" and it was super accurate and beneficial, plus it's easy to use! I will have this app on my phone and ready to go when we have Pilk baby #2! (not preg, in case you're wondering ;))

| FEEDING |
9) Baby Nursing / Breastfeeding
You will love this app from the moment you have your little one and especially when the nurses are coming in your room just about ever two hours requesting your baby's eating patterns for the previous two hours and while you're struggling to remember all of the details of your little ones last meal and diaper business, don't overwhelm yourself, just download this app and it will take care of the minor details for you ;)

| NEWBORNS, INFANTS, TODDLERS |
10) Wonder Weeks App
Babies go through MAJOR changes in the first year of life... So much so, that a major change can occur in a little as a few days. It's all so exciting for us but for your newborn, sometimes it can be overwhelming so this app helps you along the way with your baby's big leaps that usually require extra, EXTRA cuddles and love to help soothe and comfort him or her through a tough growth spurt.!

| Nursery Decor |

When it comes to my personal style, I like plain and simple, nudes, neutrals and stark white with black being the perfect base color and it should come as no surprise that our house decor would end up the same way..... Typical fashion meeting decor!

The goal for just about every room in our home is for it to be BRIGHT and sunny and that weighed heavily when designing Penelope's room. We're going with whites, creams and having some pink thrown in here or there to make the room crisp, clean, relaxing and vibrant all while being girly but not too dramatic.
When deciding where to start looking at decor and furniture for Penelope's nursery, it was either between Restoration Hardware or Pottery Barn and I ended up going with PB as their stuff isn’t as “modern” but more chic and definitely a perfect fit for a little girl!

The "Blythe" crib from Pottery Barn

Plush Play Mat from PB
Eyelet crib skirt

Bunny mobile is soooo adorable!
Bed quilt from the ruffles collection

The Sleep Sheep can be found at any store and P loves hers!!

Hospital Bag Necessities

The moment I found out I was pregnant of course I started planning every moment including what I would wear to and from the hospital, which outfit Penelope would wear home, what Devon could wear as I delivered so I could have good pics lol - I was crazy. But the one thing that I kept googling over and over and I kept asking myself, "What do I really need to bring in my hospital bag???" And every single person would either say nothing or list a boatload of stuff and it got frustrating and, as usual, I over packed. WAY over packed. I had TWO suitcases. In my defense, it was the end of March and in true march fashion in Virginia, it is warm one day and freezing the next and the day I delivered it was a warm 75° outside and the day we came home from the hospital it was in the 30's!!! We FROZE! But I came prepared for any and all weather, believe that.

Whenever we decide to try for baby #2, I won't make the same mistakes twice.. I guess I thought I was going to give birth in the woods out in the middle of no where because I literally brought everything that OF COURSE a hospital would have... Learn from my craziness.. I promise you'll be glad you did!

Things TO bring:

-Comfy Clothes
Because I promise you that leggings WILL NOT be okay. Whether you have a natural birth or a c section, the pants are TIGHT and you'll be wearing a pad so damn big that that you will LAUGH like I did when I picked them out of my bag to get dressed on the first night after delivery. Big, loose sweatpants are going to be your BFF. BRING EM' - and an over size sweat shirt/shirt because whether you like it or not, you WILL still have a belly right after you deliver, regardless of how that baby pops out. It's part of the process and there's no shame, just bring clothes to be comfortable in, seriouslyyyyy that's all that will matter. I am type-A when it comes to going out and looking decent and I have never looked back ONCE and wished I had worn something different. I wore black drawstring pants, a black tanktop and a black robe over it all.

-A Robe
Bring one! It covers your butt from the big pad you have to wear and it shields your boobs that are exposed 98% of the time, especially since you're breastfeeding a newborn. It comes in handy when you have guests that arrive as well and I will be bringing mine next time FOR. SURE.

-Toothbrush
Because my electric toothbrush doesn't compare to a regular toothbrush in the slightest.

-Shampoo and Conditioner
I'm picky about my shampoo and conditioner and the ones they offer are cool but I'd prefer my own.

-Underwear
And when I say underwear, I strictly mean granny panties or boy shorts. The next time you'll wear anything else will be anywhere from 4-6weeks. It sucks but i promise you're so wrapped up in your newborn that you could careless. Those 6 weeks after birth seemed soooo long ago now :(

-Your Breast Pump
If your goal is to breastfeed, bring your pump!! Even if you don't plan on using it for awhile, make sure the lactation consultant shows you the proper way to use your pump and to ensure it's working properly. Obviously I had never used one before so having her show me was super helpful. My next go-round I'll start pumping right away tho.. Some women don't need to but I feel like I need that extra push to get my milk to come in so I'll bring mine and start pumping as soon as baby #2 arrives.

-Not breastfeeding? Bring bottles!
Nothing is harder than having a baby with nipple confusion/preference!!!! Especially with a bottle that's hard to find like the ones that the hospital would offer. I'd personally start with one that feels like the breast such as Tommee Tippee or the LATCH bottles made by Munchkin.
Although some babies prefer Medela bottles.. That's something you'll have to figure out along the way but thankfully, you'll figure it out FAST. Which brings me to my next point: Put tons of different bottle brands on your registry ;) Even if baby #1 doesn't use them, baby #2 could LOVE them!

SNACKS!!!!
This one is so important because the moment they determine you're in labor, don't expect to eat anything other than ice chips or a Popsicle. The last time I ate  the night before my water broke was around 4:30PM. I didn't eat dinner that night and my water broke around 11:45PM and since it was my first experience with it, I wasn't 100% sure I was in labor because there were no contractions at all so I figured we'd go to the hospital to and "just see" what they would say and after that, I would get something to eat; WRONG. They watch you like a hawk and I was way too excited to even think about food so after 18hrs of labor and OVER 24hrs of not eating, I. Was. Starving! Big mistake because on top of just delivering a baby, I was left with the absolute WORST stomach ache of my life after I finally got some food. Next time, I WILL sneak some snacks for myself before I do that again. You can also buy them in the hospital but make sure you take time and eat them. Don't wait it out like I did because that's the last thing you wanna deal with after all your body has been through.

For the baby(s):

-Boppy
Even tho we only used ours for like a week after she was born, some babies/mamas love it and some don't see the hype.. That was Penelope. We pretty much tossed it after we got home from the hospital and never looked back. I will still bring it to the hospital every time I deliver because some babies enjoy being laid/propped up in it and It's worth the extra baggage for the "just in case" moment.

-Clothes
Bring cute clothes and be sure to buy one preemie outfit!!!!! Bring one 0-3m, and another 3-6m. Make sure all outfits have socks and hats! Newborns need both and you'll be glad you have all 3 sizes to put on your new boo. Penelope came out with feet so tiny and ankles so small that she had to wear preemie socks for the first month of her life, along with a preemie outfit, all of which she fit into for about 3 days but during those 3 days, the tiny newborn outfit SWALLOWED her! I'm glad we brought them. And make sure you bring long sleeves and pants for the little one because hospitals can get freezing cold and babies can't control their body heat like we can so if you aren't prepared, expect a screaming fit from your newborn.

What you WON'T need:
-Pads
The hospital will provide you with everything you'll need for about the first 3 weeks! I received a care package right after delivery that lasted me for about that long! Even if your hospital doesn't offer those packages after birth, make sure you ask them to bring you supply after supply, after all, nurses will be in and out of your room just about every 2 hours for the remainder of your stay anyways so don't hesitate to ask them to load your stock up... Those mattress pads they give you are necessary after birth for a few days so you want to make sure you get enough to last you.

Diapers
Even tho we only use natural/organic diapers for P now, I still used the crap out of the diapers the hospital offers! They usually are the Pampers Swaddlers and they leave you with a ton of packs laying around, so make sure you grab em' up. It saved us a few times because with your first, you have no idea how often you'll go through packages of diapers and since we have to order Penelope's from Honest, having these spare packs around while we got used to how often we needed to buy diapers, was a huge lifesaver, especially right after delivery and you don't want to leave the baby for a second just to run to the store. P also stayed in Newborn diapers until 2 months old, which usually doesn't happen so I was completely unprepared as I had only bought maybe one or two packs of newborn size diapers because typically they grow out of them so quickly and that wasn't the case with us so I'm glad we had backups! (I didn't put newborn diapers on my registry either because that's how much I had heard that newborns wear NB diapers for next to no time!)

Baby FAVORITES Pt.1

The very moment you become a mom, everything hits you all at once.... It's basically the only time in your life, that in a split second, you become an absolute pro, with no prior practice or training. No doctor or nurse can tell you what's best because your instinct does that for you - you're the momma.. You get the mom-instinct immediately. Also, for the rest of your life, you're blessed with 4 arms because Lord knows I use my feet to pick up, move objects and even open doors now without a second thought - But one thing that you don't get right away are all of the things your baby will love or even hate. When I signed up for my registry, as I'm sure all moms-to-be do, I registered for it ALL. I had no idea what I would love or what we would even use and I had no one my age that had a brand new infant to walk me through it so I've compiled a list of my absolute FAVORITE things that I don't even travel without, let alone go a day without using. Even if you aren't a mommy yet, or not even close to becoming one, I KNOW you're getting invited to baby showers and some of these are the perfect inexpensive gifts that you can get for that mama2be.

1 - 4moms Breeze Playard This is the easiest playard out. It's compact, and easy to open which saves so much hassle while you're holding a screaming infant trying to open this thing. Beyond simple and practical for all mamas.
2 - Fisher Price My Little Lamb Swing The was HANDS DOWN the best purchase we made. Do NOT forget to put this on your registry like we did. Penelope sleeps like a PERFECT angel in this thing and we have traveled with this EVERY SINGLE TIME we've been out of town since we've had it. We won't stay overnight anywhere without it. Simply put: It's a LIFESAVER.
3 - Burts BeesWax Tear Free Shampoo This shampoo/body wash smells like a baby in a bottle. I use Honest products too but I absolutely love using this because it smells sooo good and it's gentle on P's skin, which obviously overrides the great smell any day.
4 - Aiden + Anais Musy Mate I just blogged about this on my @babys_best Instagram because I absolutely adore this little security blanket and so does Penelope. She would always kick off her blanket during naps and bedtime because she's a hot-blooded little thing, just like me, and well, long story short, she would wake up wanting to hold her blanket because she's recently discovered the grasping effect, but it would be past her little feet and she would get frustrated and throw a fit so I would pull the blanket up, she would kick it off and history just kept repeating itself so I found the perfect balance with this little thing because she can hold onto it all the while kicking her little feet and staying cool with the blankets off. Win-win.
5 - Quinny Moodd Stroller A stroller is like a car. An investment. For something that you'll use every day, you need the thing to be able to keep up and this stroller is perfect for that. The tires are rubber and filled with air - not like other strollers with cheap plastic tires that get flat spots in them or can't roll over hard surfaces. The Quinny can go through sand, over rocks, in the grass - wherever you need it, it can go. I'm a stroller hoarder and I can say that I will back this brand for life because I have TWO myself. One aluminum frame for traveling and the heavier white frame for daily errands. This stroller is worth every penny, I promise! Plus, it grows with the child. You can detach the toddler seat and attach the infant car seat for the perfect grow-with-me feature. Plus, it has great storage underneath for shopping ;)
6 - Tommee Tippee Bottles These bottles are amazing, especially if you end up like me and switch from breast feeding to bottle feeding due to supplementing. Trust me when I say that I tried every bottle on the market.. I asked for different brands on our registry and I also purchased some other brands myself and these were the ONLY bottles P would take. These bottles also come in a variety of colors for both boys and girls so you can't go wrong with functioning cuteness.
7 - Baby Brezza Formula Pro It's 2am and you need to make a bottle - That is the exact reason why you need this. No other words necessary. It's a bit tricky to put together but I promise that you'll be so glad once you do. It's literally the Keurig for babies. Get one.... Or two.. I really don't think you can have too many of these things.
8 - Aiden + Anais Bamboo Blankets If you know me, you know I'm obsessed with anything made by A+A but these Bamboo blankets take the cake, in fact, I caught Devon using one as a blanket last night.... They're that amazing. And not only are they great for sleeping, but they're amazing as a stroller cover, breastfeeding cover, general bib to wipe messy faces and the best part is that they hold together through the many, many washes that you can imagine they're put through.
9 - LEVANA Snuza Oma Clip We all know the risks associated with infants and their breathing and well, for any new mom or even an experienced one, that is pretty concerning & scary, so that's why I had to have this perfect little monitoring clip for when Penelope sleeps. I decided to go with this over all other brands because it fits snuggly over her diaper and it actually touches her belly to monitor breaths, not feeling for movement through a mattress like some other brands. I just didn't trust that. I also love how portable this device is... I just put it in the case it came in and throw it in her diaper bag and we're ready to go. No wires, no bulky monitoring systems... Just what you see and that's it. I would spend $99 over and over if it meant I would know my daughter is safe.. There's absolutely no price on her life and that's why I saved this for last because in my eyes, if you couldn't or didn't buy a single other item I mentioned, then at least invest in this. :)

FYI: For what I could find, I linked the Target website to certain items so you can at least save 5%, especially for some of the high-ticket items.

We're Having A Baby!!

Penelope Elaine Pilkington <3

The absolute biggest day of our lives, July 11th 2013, was when we found out our life would be changed forever because I found out I was pregnant with our first baby! I have never had so many emotions run through me all at once but the one thing I have been filled with every single day are the feelings of overwhelming excitement & joy!
The second biggest day of our lives was on October 2nd 2013, we found out we would be having a precious baby girl! We had already had names picked out for both a boy and girl so when I heard "You're having a little Princess!" from the ultrasound tech, I knew we were looking at our beautiful Penelope Elaine! Penelope is a Greek name and I wanted to incorporate my heritage, which will now be her heritage as well, with the name we chose, and to me, Penelope was the perfect name for our princess, not only because of the Greek background but because it was so unique and feminine to us. Her middle name, Elaine, is a family name that we decided to use and it also starts with an "E" and because my middle name is Elizabeth, we felt it fit her well!

Ever since Devon and I got married a little over a year ago, we had wanted to start a family as soon as possible. It felt right to start a family young because we're both so close to our families, as well as being super close to each others families, so having a family of our own was beyond important. We are so blessed to be able to experience God's perfect creation and we couldn't imagine life any other way!

I'm writing this blog because for the most part, I'd like to share my journey, along with other things that I come across with current mama's, mamas2be or future mama's! FYI: I'm all about organic, natural, holistic etc so I figured with as much time as I put into research, I mind as well share it with whoever may be interested! I also plan to add pictures and updates on my Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, and I'm sorry in advanced if I go overboard but I promise you'll understand how easy it is to do when you have your own ;)

Thank you for reading <3 I'll still keep the original reason I started this blog (makeup etc) in mind, I just want to mix in baby stuff now.. As this blog revolves around my life, my new daughter will for sure be the absolute center of it and this blog may reflect that a little :) Xox
